British Council announces a series of lectures by one of the foremost linguists in the world today and the preeminent expert on the history, development and usage of the English language professor David Crystal.

9 June 19:00 – Lecture «The tongue that Shakespeare spoke»
Moscow, Russian State Library Conference Hall, 3/5 Vozdvizenka Street

The talk by David Crystal and his wife and colleague Hilary Crystal is devoted to original pronunciation of Shakespeare and literary and theatrical discoveries that have been made. The talk is in English with Russian interpreting. It will be followed by audience questions and answers.

10 June 15:00 – Lecture «Language and the Internet» 
Moscow State Pedagogical University, Malaya Pirogovka, 1/1

This talk presents the view that the Internet is in some respects a linguistic revolution, introducing new opportunities for communication, but that its influence on individual languages has so far been quite limited.

11 June 15:00 – Lecture «English Accents — Past, Present, Future»
Saint Petersburg State University, 7–9, Universitetskaya nab. Hall of the Faculty of Philology.

The lecture is devoted to origins, development and features of English accents which are always in the news. This is the topic of general interest and of specific interest for teachers. David Crystal looks at where the accents came from, what’s happening to them now, and explains why people care so much about them. The talk will be in English.

14 June 15:00 — Book signing at Bookbridge
Business centre «Bookbridge», Bolshaya tatarskaya, 7

David Crystal will be hosting an autograph session at the book shop «Bookbridge». You can buy his books or bring pre-owned books with you to get them signed.
The event is organised by Cambridge University Press Russia, Cambridge resources centre of «Britannia Holding» and business centre «Bookbridge».

 

Within the framework of Shakespeare 450 Anniversary David Crystal takes part in Moscow Open Book Festival.

13 June, 12:00 — Breakfast with Shakespeare

David Crystal and Igor Shaitanov will discuss the topics of legacy and interpretation of Shakespeare works. The discussion is in English with Russian interpreting.
The festival ticket is required.

14 June, 13:00 — Playing with Shakespeare: facts and fictions
Moscow Open Book Festival, Central House of Artists, Moscow, Krymskiy Val, 10

David and Hilary Crystal create a Shakespearean atmosphere with their light-hearted presentation of old and new facts and fictions about the language of Shakespeare. The festival ticket is required. The discussion is in English with Russian interpreting.

 

Speakers

Professor David Crystal — fellow of the British Academy, OBE, writer, editor, lecturer, and broadcaster. He lectured at scores of universities around the world and is now Honorary Professor of Linguistics at the University of Wales, Bangor. He has been a linguistic consultant of the Globe Theatre and the British Library. David Crystal is currently patron of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) and the Association for Language Learning (ALL), president of the UK National Literacy Association and an honorary vice-president of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. 

Hilary Crystal — David’s wife and business partner, is a former speech therapist and encyclopedia sub-editor. She has designed several books for their partnership, and has recently published her first children’s novel, The Memors.

Igor Shaitanov — Doctor of philology, professor, specialist in the field of English Literature, president of the board of «Russian Booker», editor in chief of science-fiction magazine «Literature Questions». He is an author of more than 400 books, including the biography of William Shakespeare in the series «Life of Outstanding People» (2013) and electronic encyclopaedia «Shakespeare World».

 

The lectures will be held within the framework of the UK-Russia Year of Culture 2014.
