The British Council is announcing the acceptance of applications from young Russian journalists to participate in an international conference dedicated to journalism and media: Future NEWS 2015, which will take place in the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh from 4-6 September.

The two best applicants will represent Russia at the conference.

The theme of the conference this year is The Business of News. Future NEWS will bring 100 participants from 20 countries to Edinburgh, and they will have an opportunity to meet leading figures in international journalism. Conference participants will meet colleagues from other countries, will gain real life experience of the role of an editor and expand their professional portfolio.

We are accepting applications from undergraduates/graduates in Journalism enrolled at Russian universities, aged 18-25 and interested in a future career in this area.

Competition terms and conditions

1. The competition is open to undergraduates/graduates in Journalism aged 18-25, holding Russian citizenship.

2. Participants are required to have at least Upper Intermediate (B2) level of English.

3. Participants are required to hold a valid foreign passport and must be able to travel to the UK at the beginning of September 2015.

4. Applications are accepted strictly until 18.00 10th August 2015. Only one application per participant will be accepted.

5. Based on the competition results, the British Council jury will select two participants to represent Russia at the conference.

6. The British Council will get in touch with successful candidates by 12 August 2015. The results of the competition will be published on the website and on social media of the British Council in Russia. 

7. The British Council arranges and covers expenses for the UK visa, covers travel expenses from the town of the future participant to Edinburgh and back, food and a daily allowance.

How to apply

To participate in the competition, send an e-mail to, stating "Future NEWS Competition Entry" as a subject:

1. An essay in English on the topic of “Why journalism needs me” (Strictly limited to 500 words in MS Word, font Arial, size 11)

2. A cover letter in Russian about yourself, your professional experience and interests (limited to 1 page in MS Word in A4 format)

3. The following contact details need to be presented in the e-mail:

- Full name 

- Date of birth

- Citizenship

- Foreign passport number and expiry date

- Name of university and department where you study or graduated from, university course

- Home address

- Contact phone number

- E-mail

A reference letter including referee’s contact details will be beneficial during application review.

Applications are accepted strictly until 18.00 on 10 August 2015. Only one application per participant will be accepted.

Future News 2015

Future NEWS 2015 aims to inspire young people with a flair and interest in journalism and help them pursue their career aspirations in this area.

It will introduce more than 100 undergraduates from 20 countries to leading international media figures in areas from editorial management to news, sports and business reporting and give them hands-on practice in everything from video to writing and social media.

Future NEWS 2015 is supported by the British Council, the international media company Reuters, the main British university journalism schools, along with a wide range of international and British media partner organisations.
