The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts / NCCA Ekaterinburg launch а talk with artists from Scotland, Sonja Killman and Raydale Dower, this time in an unusual form. The artists have already begun their work as part of the Young Artist Lab, and the improvised artist-talk: the first open event. It will be a lively conversation about sound and their own practice, which covers different approaches to sound art in contemporary art. We will discuss different types of work, including field recordings, visual coding, creating spatial sound installations, electronic music, Dadaist sound experiments and others.
The Sound Art Lab is part of the international UK - Russia Creative Bridge programme 2021-2022 and supported by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in Russia. It is also a part of the Young Artist Lab.
The Young Artist Lab is run jointly with the Autonomous Nonprofit Organization «Standard 2.0» and with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
Sonia Killman is a Glasgow-based international composer and multimedia artist. Her works often involve field recordings, as well as a mixture of live processing and audiovisual music. In her ambient duo Failed System Test Sonia uses coded visuals and Ableton Live to create an immersive experience through melodic saxophone playing and live digital processing of multiple mediums.
Raydale Dower, an artist, lives and works in Glasgow. Dower’s practice is wide-ranging and diverse with a sculptural approach to installation, sound, object, events and situations, informed by research and personal experience coupled with a long-term interest in anarchic philosophy and its relationship to avant-garde movements. A key element, maintained across Dower’s projects, is an interest in the treatment of space through the lens of cultural, social and sonic signifiers. Solo exhibitions include The Gift, The W OR M / Peacock Visual Arts, Aberdeen, UK (2017); On Memory and Chance, The Changing Room, Stirling, UK (2011); Piano Drop, Tramway, Glasgow (2011).
