From 9-13 February, Moscow will host the IV Annual Festival of Inclusive Theatre, titled PROTEATR. International Meetings.
The festival is a celebration of inclusive and innovative theatre projects featuring active participation from actors with disabilities. This year’s focus is on classical and contemporary dance.
The British Council supports the festival’s UK programme, showcasing artistic work from Exim Dance Company. The programme will also include workshops led by Exim Dance Company and choreographer Adam Benjamin.

Workshop: Solving problems as part of an inclusive team led by Adam Benjamin
The workshop will introduce this problem solving practice through sensory exploration, starting from a place of connection and trust and building toward challenge and risk. Adam’s work is deceptively simple but through humor and a deeply embodied knowledge, moves subtly toward complexity. Participants will work together to solve problems as part of an inclusive team.
The workshop is open to dancers and professionals with an interest in stage movement. |

The Birth of Memory, Exim Dance Company Choreography: Adam Benjamin The Birth of Memory is a physical exploration of the memories we keep locked in our bodies, and the effort needed in the present, to find time to remember the past. Award winning choreographer Adam Benjamin delicately explores this concept, focusing on human relationships in a way which is exposing and unpredictable, but also at times comical. The work draws on film by Kayla Parker and music by Eduardo Miranda, Matthew Emmet and Andy Cowton's. The choreography is heavily influenced by the contributions of dance artists, Emma Pendle, Laura Henry, Mike Williams and particularly the raw, indefinable movement quality of dancer Kevin French whose muscles and speech are affected by cerebral palsy. |

Workshop: Exim Dance Company
The workshop will be led by four facilitators from Exim Dance Company: Laura Francesca Henry, Kevin French, Emma Pendle and Mike Williams. They will share Exim Dance Company’s creative approach to choreography with dancers of all ages and levels of experience. Participants will learn about the practice of inclusive dance, including how to support dancers with disabilities. The workshop is open to choreographers and dancers of all levels. Participants will receive educational resources from Exim Dance Company, but we recommend bringing your own note-taking materials as well – this could include devices for recording audio notes. Please wear loose fitting clothing in which you can comfortably move. |
Adam Benjamin is choreographer, teacher, co-founder of CandoCo Dance Company. The author of "Making an Entrance. Theory and practice for disabled and non-disabled dancers", "Dance, access and inclusion: perspectives on dance, young people and change" and articles on inclusive performances and movement practices of professional collectives and social communities.
Exim Dance Company creates live performance work that draws on the curiosity and inquisitive nature of the artists involved.
