Experimental film practices have a long history of approaching the archive as a site of destabilising canons and histories. The archive can be active, fragmented, unstable and resistant: by making visible the sonic and tactile environments woven into the social and political fabric of life itself, the archive can both obscure and reanimate memories, histories of violence, and colonial power.
“Extracurricular Practices” lecturer Nikolaus Perneczky, researcher Alexandra Shestakova and the co-curators of the school Rita Sokolovskaya and Alexandra Anikina will discuss the questions on the intersection of the school’s theme — archive as a critical method — and the challenges of moving image education, community-building and artistic research.
The streaming will be available on MIEFF Facebook page.
The event is part of the international UK – Russia Creative Bridge programme 2021-2022 supported by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in Moscow.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Nikolaus Perneczky is a writer and curator based in London. His Ph.D. project at Goldsmiths, University of London, reappraised the practice of filmmaking in post-independence West Africa as a struggle against the logic of “development”; his postdoctoral research considers the politics and ethics of global film heritage in relation to colonial legacies of epistemic violence and unequal exchange. Along with curator and archivist June Givanni, Nikolaus is currently working on a podcast series on the unevenly distributed archive(s) of African cinema and the question of restitution.
Sasha Anikina is a media artist and researcher with a PhD at the Goldsmiths University in London. Currently, she teaches at the London South Bank University. As an artist, she explores video, digital media, software and performative lectures. Her works participated in the IV and VI Moscow International Biennale for Young Art, the XIII Krasnoyarsk Museum Biennale, as well as in exhibitions and shows at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Gaîté Lyrique, Paris; Anthology Film Archives, New York; NCCA; Korean Film Archive and Art Sonje Museum, Seoul; gallery Sanatorium, Istanbul. They also appear in the collection of the NCCA (ROSIZO). In 2018 she was a co-curator of the IMPAKT media art festival (Utrecht, Netherlands) focused on so-called “algorithmic superstructures”.
