On July 31, 2015 as part of the Selector PRO music festival the British Council will host the lecture “Ocean of Sound. How music is born” by David Toop.
David Toop will talk about the connection between the technique of close listening, “quiet” types of art, such as painting or sculpting and the process of music creation. In other words, after David’s lecture you will definitely know what happens if the breathing of a sleeping dog, Dutch paintings of the XVII century and the sounds you were frightened by in childhood are mixed together.
The moderator of the discussion: Maxim Semelyak - journalist, music critic, editor-in-chief of The Prime Russian Magazine, an author of “Music for the real man. The history of the Leningrad band".
The discussion will take place in the courtyard of Strelka Institute, (Bersenevskaya Naberezhnaya 14/5A) at 8 pm.

David Toop
David Toop is a British artist, critic and leading modern experimental music researcher. He has produced seven solo albums, including Museum of Fruit, Pink Noir and Black Chamber. In 2000, he curated the ‘Sonic Boom: the Art of Sound’ exhibition in London.
His books ‘Rap Attack’ and ‘Ocean of Sound’ became a sensation among readers. ‘Rap attack’, a research on the evolution of rap from the African local style to global hip-hop, has become a bestseller that has been through a number of reprints. Another of his books, ‘Ocean of Sound’, was included in the 50 Greatest Music Books according to the Guardian and Afisha magazines. David Toop is a professor at the University of the Arts London and Senior Research Fellow at the Sound Arts & Design Department of the London College of Communication. He is an author of the digital technologies and improvised musical performances unique research project: Sound Body.
